Zoals de Paternoster wandlamp heeft ook het tafel lampje een eenvoudige constructie.De lamp bestaat uit een 3D-geprinte verbindingsstuk waarin twee gebogen RVS staafjes zijn bevestigd. De lichtkap met ingebouwde LED wordt tussen deze twee RVS-staafjes geklemd. Alle lichtkapjes van de Paternoster passen op deze lamphouder. Op bovenstaande foto’s zijn verschillende modellen licht kapjes te zien die niet standaard geproduceerd worden maar tonen wel de mogelijkheden van 3D-printen.

Like the Paternoster wall light, also the table light has a simple construction. The lamp consists of two bent stainless steel rods attached to a 3D-printed connector.
The lamp shade with built in LED is clamped between the two rods. The above photo’s show different models of light shades developed for the Paternoster which are not commonly produced but demonstrate the possibility of 3D-printing.

PATERNOSTER THRILL

Het kapje van ‘THRILL’ is ontworpen door Kees Kamper. Hij gebruikte wiskundige principes om een vorm the maken die de indruk wekt dat hij om de ijzeren staafjes gewikkeld is. Maar zoals je in het tweede plaatje ziet is dat gezichtsbedrog.

The shade of ‘THRILL’ is designed by Kees Kamper. He used mathematics to create a shade that looks like as if it’s lingering around the chassis of the lamp. But, as can be seen in the second image from the right, this is an optical illusion.

De basis van de Halo lamp bestaat uit een acryl schijf die vrij om een conventionele LED lamp kan roteren. De platen zijn gemaakt van semi transparant spiegel acryl met een zilver en goud gecoate kant. Door het gebruik van twee platen ontstaan bijzondere licht effecten waarbij de gloeilamp en ringen van de schijf eindeloos herhaald worden. De Halo serie is verkrijgbaar als wandlamp, tafellamp en in hanglamp of plafonnière.

The basis of the Halo light consists of an acryl disc with a hole that permits to rotate freely around the LED bulb. The plates are made of semi transparant mirror acrylic with a silver and a gold coated side. Special light effects are created by positioning the discs on opposite sides  between a light bulb resulting in endless repeating images of the lamp and rings of the disc. The Halo light is available as a wall, table, pendant or ceiling lamp.

TORSO

Ontwerp: Kees Kamper

De basis van de Torso is een cilinder vorm die zo getordeerd wordt dat het gelijkenis vertoond met een torso. Door de windingen in de lamp in combinatie met de ‘infill only’ print techniek ontstaat er een uniek 3D-print patroon.  De Torso hang lamp is in twee maten verkrijgbaar.

The basic form of this lamp is a cylinder that is twisted in such a way that it looks like a Torso. The windings in the lamp in combination with the ‘infill only’ print technique results in a unique pattern. The lamp is available in two sizes.

GeO

De GeO serie is meer een licht-sculptuur dan een lamp, een combinatie van de twee meest elementaire GeOmetrische vormen een cirkel en een vierkant. Een brede RVS of messing ring met LED kan op verschillende posities in de vierkante RVS houder geplaatst worden. Vanuit de vierkante houder valt het licht op de ring.

The GeO series is more a light sculpture than a lamp, it combines the two most elementary GeOmetric forms the circle and the square. A broad steel or brass ring with built in LED can be positioned freely in the square holder. The light from the square holder is projected onto the ring.

TOORTS

Het armatuur van de Toorts bestaat uit twee RVS draden (+ en -) waarvan de uiteinden zo geconstrueerd zijn dat er een conventionele gloei/LED lamp in gedraaid kan worden. Door het minimale materiaal gebruik lijken de lampen in deze ijle constructie te zweven. De armaturen zijn in hoogte verstelbaar en worden in de vier buizen van de lamp voet geplaatst. 

The lamp fixture of the Toorts is based on two steel wires (12V, + and -) of which the ends are constructed in such away that it can hold a conventional bulb. The bulbs almost seem to float in the thin minimal construction. The wires are placed in the four tubes of the square lamp base and the height of the four lamp fixtures can be adjusted.

Door het minimale materiaal gebruik lijken de lampen in deze ijle constructie te zweven. De armaturen kunnen onderling geschakeld worden. Er zijn veel combinaties mogelijk variërend van een ‘klassieke’  kroonluchter tot een gordijn van licht.

Here we go

Some weeks ago we were asked to design a light with logos to present to Secretary of State Keijzer and prince Constantijn on the opening of the Dutch young tech startups pavilion of the Hannover Messe 2018. We did, and on the first of May the pavilion was opened by secretary of state and the prince. This event was hosted by a young tech company called 3D4makers. They invented a waterless production process of 3Dprint filaments. SCHOONE LIGHTS uses 3D4makers PET-G in it’s prints, with great results.

During the passed two years, Gerard Schoone designed many variations of his smart light systems on 12 Volt (PATERNOSTER). Kees Kamper prototyped the ‘infill only’ parts and together they created the Schoone Light Collection.
On 6, 7 and 8 June The Schoone Light Collection is presented at Design District Rotterdam in the Van Nelle Factory. Check our newsletter for additional information about SCHOONE LIGHTS at DDR 2018.

Schoone Lights had a wonderful time at Rotterdam Design District. In fact we were surprised by the amount of positive attention our product received. Many visitors liked what they saw, but were curious about what they were looking at. Understandable, because when you see ‘infill only’ 3D prints for the first time,  you might think: is it a kind of fabric or is it perhaps glass? Regular 3D prints have a plastic look and feel, ‘infill only’ products are mysterious.

Some months later, at ‘MEESTERLIJK’, a 3 day event the Westergasfabriek Amsterdam (where professionals from traditional craft such as silversmiths and woodworkers together with designers and manufacturers of handmade design expose their products) we had the same experience. Many people took a closer look at our ‘infill only’ shades, but did not dare to touch them. When we told them, they could, most people were surprised. They expected very fragile material, but they experienced a strong and stiff lamp shade: nice surprise.

A month ago Kees was interviewed by Bob Timroff of the Dutch tech magazine MACHINA. Bob wrote a great story about the Kees Kamper’s 3D print adventures and Bob tells the ‘infill only’ story better than we do.

Old idea, new light

In our last post we used 3D printing to create a new part to build a better version of an almost forgotten chandelier. Gerard modified the steel rods and in this post we use the same central part to present a fully 3D printed chandelier: TRAPEZE 02

The same light shades we used in our standing lights, are now building a hanging light. One can also put this light system upside down and it becomes a standing light!

Trapeze 02 is rather big, how about a smaller version?
After some adaptations of the central 3D printed part we prototyped TRAPEZE 03. To complete the Schoone Lights collection 2018 we also needed a wall light. New modifications of the central part gave birth to WALL ONE.

It’s amazing to see how 3D design and printing allows you to check out (prototype) your ideas in a very short time. Some years ago you needed a expensive molding service to build your prototypes. Today some 3D modelling and 3D printing do this trick faster and cheaper.
